Google’s phone takes shape in the G1

Here’s some exciting news about Google Inc.’s much awaited Android mobile. The first handset to use Google’s Android mobile operating software will be released on October 22 and is said will sport a $180 price tag that undercuts Apple’s iPhone by 20 bucks, in the US. The phone, which features a slide-out keypad, is manufactured by HTC Corp. and will be sold by T-Mobile USA. It is a swivel-cum-flip phone with a QWERTY keyboard. It also has a 3.17-inch touch screen, much wider than the iPhone. The G1 phone is said to have been completely developed on an open source Android platform developed by Google, which allows third-party developers to create applications, similar to the Apple iPhone. A Google spokesperson said “Android includes a browser that is based on Webkit, which is incidentally also the underlying technology for Chrome, Google Inc.’s web browser.” Andy Rubin, the man behind the G1 calls the browser build into Android as “Chrome lite.” So, if you are currently a T-Mobile customer, then you can order it online today! We in India will still have to wait, for there’s no news on India launch.

Samsung’s Omnia now in India

Samsung Mobile has launched its top of the line multimedia phone, the Samsung Omnia, in the Indian market. Living up to it’s ‘Next is what’ theme, Samsung claims to have taken mobile experience to the ‘next’ level, with the Omnia. It’s probably also Samsung’s answer to the Apple iPhone 3G and Nokia N96. Featuring the patented TouchWiz interface, this touch screen handset comes with a 3.2-inch screen, which is considerably wider compared to the N96, and a little narrower compared to the iPhone.
While the Nokia N96 has 16 GB of memory space plus extendable microSD card for 8 GB, the Omnia is made available in two variants and with considerably bigger memory – 24 GB and 32 GB. Unlike Apple’s depressing camera, this one comes with a five-mega pixel CMOS camera. It features an ultra-slim 12.5-mm profile and a platinum-look finish that’ll comfortably fit your palms. Meaning ‘everything’ in Latin and ‘wish’ in Arabic, this Samsung mobile sports some elegant hairline patterns on the back of the handset.
Price
32 GB: Rs.39,999
24 GB: Rs 37,999

Sony does a recall

Sony Corporation has announced that it is set to recall 4,38,000 VAIO portable laptops due to potential burn hazards because of overheating and short circuit. Reports say that the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, which received 15 complaints of overheating from customers as well as one of minor burns, has advised users of the affected models to refrain from using them as its “irregularly positioned wires near the computer hinge and/or a dislodged screw inside the hinge can cause a short circuit and overheating.” The laptops that will troop back to Sony’s stable for repairs or replacement are VGN-TZ100, VGN-TZ200, VGN-TZ300 and VGN-TZ2000 series. There has been no mention of recalling laptops from India. However, Sony has started a voluntary programme for free inspection and has also initiated repairs at the customers’ home or office.
